Constant thickness wood lamination for building longbows or recurves
For Longbows
Width 38mm = 1½”
Thickness 2mm = 0.080″ or 0.6mm = 0.0236″
Length 180cm = 71″ or 85cm = 33.46″
For Recurves
Width 45mm = 1Âľ”
Thickness 0.6mm = 0.0236″
Length 70cm = 27.5″
The laminations must be glued between two FIBERGLASS strips using EPOXY GLUE. They are perfectly dried and the surface is ready for bonding. Avoid contaminating or moistening the surface to ensure a perfect result.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The number and thickness of the wood laminations inserted between the two fiberglass strips determins the overall thickness of the bow which directly affects its draw weight.
Predicting the final draw weight on the first attempt is fairly difficult as it depends on many factors including bow length, shape, pressure and gluing technique. Thickness is the main variable you can adjust by changing the number and thickness of the laminations used.
As a purely indicative reference one tenth of a millimeter may correspond to approximately one pound on a straight longbow.

MY IMPRESSIONS
Regarding bow performance the type of wood used has no significant influence but the aesthetic result is certainly important and the overall value of the product also depends on the type of visible wood under the transparent fiberglass. For longbows I recommend using the 2 mm laminations to build thickness in the limb and the 0.6 mm laminations to showcase the desired wood.
For recurves an excellent solution which I use along with many other professional bowyers is to combine one tapered core BAMBOO LAMINATION with two 0.6 mm wood laminations to achieve outstanding performance and unmatched aesthetics
